I'm sorry, I haven't blogged for a long time. I hope to start again very soon, but until then, enjoy the archives!
My mind is restless place, I have so many different thoughts running around it, and if I’m honest the thoughts I’m thinking are not always particularly healthy thoughts. I’ve spoken to several people about this, and it turns out I’m not the only one. I expect you know exactly what I’m talking about.
You might think that what we think about doesn’t really matter. After all, our thoughts are private right?! Actually they’re not. Just like the saying “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” is simply not true, what goes on in our mind doesn’t stay in our mind. The mind is the control centre for our bodies and what we think about affects how we act. No wonder the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans says, “be transformed… BY the renewing of your mind.” That’s what 40/40 is all about, it’s about changing what we think, it’s about renewing our minds, so we can live transformed lives.
We’re not going to be able to stop thinking unhealthy thoughts by trying to stop thinking unhealthy thoughts! What we have to do is start thinking about something else. That’s where the 40/40 challenge comes in. This is what it involves…
Every morning for 40 days there is a short-Bible passage for us to read followed by a short comment to get us thinking. Then there is a short prayer and a question for us to ponder. That’s where a lot of Bible reading notes end. With 40/40 that’s just the beginning!
Too often we spend a few minutes reading the Bible in the morning and then get on with our lives. 40/40 is about taking what we read in the Bible into our lives – so our minds are renewed and our lives are transformed. To help us do this there are more ideas to help ensure the word of God occupies our mind for the entire day. Each day there is a conversation starter, a creative way to write or symbolise the passage to help us remember it and there is a suggested action – something, usually pretty simple, that we can do to put God’s word into action during the day.
Then, every evening, there’s another short passage for us to read, along with a prayer and something for us to ponder as we fall asleep. So, day-and-night, the word of God will be occupying our minds, changing the way we think and transforming the way we live our lives.
I should mention, 40/40 isn’t a collection of randomly pulled together Bible passages, throughout the 40 days we journey through the story of the entire Bible – so we get to learn a little about how our lives connect to God’s big story.
40/40 isn’t so much about taking time out to engage with God’s Words, rather it’s about taking God’s word INTO our busy lives. So, if you want to spend the next 40 days renewing your mind and transforming your life order your copy of 40/40 now.
